Nobody enjoys talking about insurance. It brings up conversations most people would rather avoid, about death, illness, and worst-case scenarios. But avoiding the conversation does not make the risk go away.

Most Trinbagonians work hard to build something for themselves and their families. The part that often gets overlooked is protecting what you build. One unexpected event, a death, a serious illness, a flood, can undo years of progress if you are not properly covered.

So let us talk about the four types of insurance that actually matter.

1. Life Insurance

If anyone depends on your income, you need life insurance. That is not a suggestion.

A solid starting point is coverage equal to at least 10 times your annual income. But beyond that, think about your mortgage, your children's school fees, any outstanding debt, and even funeral costs. These things do not pause because you are gone.

Do not overlook your spouse either, even if they are not bringing in a salary. Childcare, cooking, running the household. Try pricing all of that out. You have two main routes: term life, which covers you for a fixed period at a lower cost, or whole life, which covers you permanently and builds cash value over time. Which one suits you depends on your stage of life and your goals.

2. Health Insurance

Ask anyone who has had to pay a private medical bill out of pocket and they will tell you the same thing. It is expensive and it happens fast.

NIS helps, but it does not go far enough. Health insurance gives you access to private care, shorter wait times, and real protection when something goes wrong. This is not a perk for people with money. It is a financial safeguard that belongs in every household.

3. Disability Insurance

This is the one most people skip, and it is a mistake. Roughly 1 in 3 working adults will experience a disability before they reach retirement age. Not a statistic most people think applies to them, until it does.

Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income if you cannot work due to illness or injury. For teachers, police officers, engineers, tradespeople, anyone whose livelihood depends on showing up and being functional, this coverage is not optional. Your ability to earn is your most valuable financial asset.

4. Property Insurance

For most people in Trinidad and Tobago, their home is the single biggest investment they will ever make. Yet many are either underinsured or not insured at all.

We live in a country where flooding, fire, and break-ins are not rare occurrences. A proper property insurance policy covers the structure, your belongings inside, and in some cases, liability if someone gets hurt on your property. One bad rainy season should not be enough to set you back years.

Insurance is not about being pessimistic. It is about being responsible with what you have worked for. The goal is simple: if something goes wrong, your family should not have to start over.

Every person's situation is different. The coverage that works for your neighbour may leave serious gaps for you. A proper review of your insurance portfolio will show you exactly where you stand and what needs to change.
